The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution outlawed slavery—in a country where more than 2 million adults are now incarcerated. In 13th, Ava DuVernay (Selma) draws a parallel between the two, examining mass incarceration in America within the context of slavery. The trailer for the new documentary touches on the three-strikes law, the rise of private prisons, and the pressure for politicians to appear tough on crime, including archival footage of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

13th, which will be the first-ever doc to open the New York Film Festival on Friday, hits Netflix and select theaters Oct. 7.
