White House Told CDC: Come Up With More Evidence to Support School Reopenings

The White House put the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under immense pressure to produce more evidence that suited the Trump administration’s agenda to send kids and teachers back to school in person before the election despite the raging coronavirus pandemic, The New York Times reports. One member of Vice President Mike Pence’s staff claims that she was repeatedly asked to instruct the CDC to write more reports that showed a decline in virus cases among young people. The staff member, Olivia Troye, said she regretted being “complicit” in the effort, and left the White House in August. One unnamed former public-health official told the Times that, before a task force briefing in June, White House officials asked the CDC for supportive data in “a snazzy, easy-to-read document.” Recent data shows that hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-1 have increased at a faster rate in children and teens than among the general public. One coronavirus tracking project has reported at least 30,000 cases in U.S. schools since the school year began.

Sources with knowledge of the campaign also told Politico that Caputo’s assistant, Madeleine Hubbard, a 2020 college graduate with no public health experience, had repeatedly overstepped her role in the project. Trump aide Hope Hicks tests positive for COVID-19

White House adviser Hope Hicks has tested positive for COVID-19, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to The Hill on Thursday, after she traveled with President Trump on Air Force One earlier in the week.

Hicks is the closest aide to Trump to test positive for the virus. Her diagnosis was first reported by Bloomberg News.

"The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously," deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in a statement that did not mention Hicks.

"White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling," Deere said.

Yes I will because Trump is to blame for the deaths of more than 209,000 Americans. Trump deliberately lied, utterly failed at a national response, wasted the lock down by demanding states open up too soon and against CDC guidelines. And now COVID 19 cases are climbing again and about 1,000 Americans a day are still dying. While COVID Don spreads COVID 19 through his inner circle and his cult followers at his rallies.

Probe into Trump’s COVID-19 failure shows ‘unprecedented, coordinated’ political interference

A new analysis out Friday reveals that throughout President Donald Trump’s failed response to the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic fallout that has resulted in the deaths of more than 200,000 Americans and left millions unemployed without public support, his administration has “engaged in a persistent pattern of political interference—repeatedly overruling and sidelining top scientists and undermining Americans’ health to advance the president’s partisan agenda.”

The report (pdf) released by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis documents 47 separate instances in which White House officials have “attacked and undermined health experts” in the past eight months.

The report “does not capture each instance in which Trump or his appointees downplayed the danger of the virus to the public, made false and misleading statements about the science, and misstated key facts about the administration’s response,” but rather focuses on “instances where the administration actively interfered in the nation’s public health response through executive action or public or private pressure.”

Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, White House officials, and political appointees at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and other agencies have interfered dozens of times both publicly and behind closed doors during the pandemic, the report states.

“These incidents have degraded every major facet of the administration’s public health response,” the report notes, “including efforts to provide Americans access to testing and personal protective equipment, develop treatments and vaccines, and provide scientifically sound advice to the public on masks, social distancing, and other steps to stay safe.”

According to the subcommittee’s analysis of public reporting and internal investigations, Trump’s political appointees have:

Pressured health experts to adopt the administration’s talking points, even when they conflict with the science;

Criticized, sidelined, and fired experts who insisted on sharing accurate scientific information with the public;

Altered, delayed, and suppressed guidance and scientific reports on testing, protecting children, reopening schools, voting safely, and other topics;

Authorized questionable virus treatments over the objections of scientists;

Resisted efforts to ensure the safe development of a vaccine; and

Diverted $265 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration for an ad campaign to “defeat despair and inspire hope” weeks before Election Day.

The first documented case of political interference occurred on February 20 when the administration rejected the CDC’s recommendation to separate infected and non-infected cruise ship passengers onto different flights.

There were 17 incidents in August and September alone, and the most recent instance examined by the subcommittee is also related to the cruise ship industry. On September 29, Pence overruled CDC Director Redfield’s recommendation to “extend a no-sail order on passenger cruises until February 2021.”

Axios reported at the time that “public health officials have privately complained that the thwarting of Redfield on the cruise ship ban is politically motivated because the industry is a major economic presence in Florida—a key battleground state where the polls are statistically tied.”

According to the subcomittee, the “apparent goal” of the Trump administration’s “unprecedented, coordinated attack on our nation’s public health agencies… was, in the president’s words, to ‘play it down.'”

Less than two days before Trump—along with 43,000 additional Americans who have tested positive in the past 24 hours—was diagnosed with a virus he claimed was nearly defeated, a study (pdf) by researchers at Cornell University found that Trump is the “single largest driver” of misinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic, as the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Even a U.S. president couldn't avoid a pandemic that swept the world and infected millions.

The year: 1919. The president: Woodrow Wilson.

The disease dubbed "The Spanish flu" emerged in 1918 during the last months of World War I.

Initially, the Wilson administration tried to play down the disease even as it spread worldwide.

Presidential historian Tevi Troy, citing the administration's response to the pandemic, calls Wilson the worst U.S. president in terms of handling a disaster.

“The federal response to the influenza outbreak in 1918 can best be described as neglectful. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died without President Wilson saying anything or mobilizing nonmilitary components of the U.S. government to help the civilian population,” Troy writes in "Shall We Wake the President: Two Centuries of Disaster Management from the Oval Office."

He also blames Wilson for contributing to the pandemic by continuing the mobilization of troops “even as World War I was winding to a close.”

In April 1919, however, Wilson himself contracted the illness shortly after arriving in Paris for the Big Four peace talks.

Privately, however, Grayson told a different story. In a letter that only became public a little over a decade ago, he wrote to a friend on April 14, explaining, “These past two weeks have certainly been strenuous days for me. During the peace talks, Fling writes, the Big Four were were trying to solve larger questions of German reparations, the creation of the League of Nations, and the threat of Bolshevism — "all of which were jeopardized by Wilson’s sickness."

Around the same time, a Washington Post columnist wrote: "The country will be anxious regarding President Wilson until he is again at work ... It is a time when an hour lost means the loss of millions of hours to these individuals who are awaiting to begin reconstruction ... the allied world hopes for the sake of its material interests that his illness will be light and brief."

Barry writes that the flu undercut Wilson's stamina, disrupted his concentration, and affected “his mind in other, deeper ways.”

Six months after contracting the flu, Wilson suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed and blind and effectively incapacitated as president. He died in February 1924, three years after leaving office.

Trump Official Told CDC to Change Report on COVID-19 and Kids, Says Report

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in early September changed a scientific report on the coronavirus and how it affects children days after a Trump administration official requested similar changes, Politico reports. The request, which was sent by then-public-affairs official Paul Alexander, came as President Donald Trump was publicly pushing for school reopenings in early September. Alexander said the report shouldn’t describe teenagers aged 18 and older as “pediatric” patients or conflate the risks of COVID-19 to young children and older adolescents. The final version of the CDC’s report contained changes in line with those requested by Alexander, though similar changes were also been suggested by civil servants, according to Politico. Last week, it was reported that White House coronavirus coordinator Deborah Birx pressed the CDC to adjust guidance on reopening schools.

Trump’s Economic Growth Is Slower Than Obama’s Last 3 Years

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis released its first estimate for the December quarter and it shows the economy growing at 2.1%. For 2019 GDP growth was 2.3%, which is down from 2.9% in 2018 and just below 2.4% in 2017, Trump’s first year in office.

Over the 12 quarters Trump has been President only four of them have had GDP growth over 3% and six of the quarter’s growth was 2.3% or lower. And for the past three quarters GDP growth has been 2.0%, 2.1% and 2.1%, respectively. This is a far cry from Trump’s claim that the economy could growth 4%, 5% or maybe even 6% when he was President.

Under Trump business investment has turned negative the past three quarters and is negative or essentially flat when the impact of inventory changes are taken into account...

Obama’s last three years had better growth than Trump’s three years...

Using the same GDP metric of consumer spending plus business investment adjusted for inventory changes, Obama’s last three years in office had growth rates of at least 2.17% and as high as 3.06%.

For Trump the high point was 2.83% in 2018 when the tax cut seems to have had the largest impact and even fell short of Obama’s 2014 and 2015 growth rates of 3.06% and 3.05%, respectively.

GOP candidate dies from COVID-19 – but will remain on the North Dakota ballot

Republican candidate for the North Dakota House of Representatives, David Andahl, died from complications due to coronavirus this Monday. But with no way to replace his name on the November ballot, Secretary of State Al Jaeger says his name will stay, the Grand Forks Herald reports.

“There’s no way to remove him,” Jaeger said. “At this point he can’t be replaced on the ballot, but people can still vote for him.”

Andahl’s campaign was still pushing out messaging as recently as Sunday morning. “Election Day is fast approaching,” read a post from 8:39 a.m. Sunday. “I listened to my constituents and worked collaboratively with my colleagues to find solutions. I will bring this same approach to the legislature, representing your concerns in District 8. I appreciate your support!”

Jaeger said he and his office are looking into how to handle the possibility of Andahl actually winning.

Freely, Dr. Person Fakename, and Dr. Johnny Bananas.
