Peacehaven is no dumping site

Speaking to Ster North, community spokesperson Hanna Koekemoer said some of the culprits caught in the act are well-known businesses operating in the Vaal Triangle.

VEREENIGING – There is mounting frustration in Peace Haven, where residents say they have had enough of people turning their area into an illegal dumping site. This is after residents witnessed an alarming increase in household rubbish and building rubble being discarded allegedly by individuals and businesses from surrounding areas.

Speaking to Ster North, community spokesperson Hanna Koekemoer said some of the culprits caught in the act are well-known businesses operating in the Vaal Triangle.
“Evidence collected by vigilant residents exposes these offenders, raising serious questions about their ethical responsibility to the community. The consequences of this unlawful behaviour extend beyond aesthetics. Illegal dumping poses serious health and safety risks, attracting pests and creating potential hazards for children and pedestrians.”

Koekemoer said this action devalues properties and tarnishes the reputation of Peace Haven.

“Despite efforts by residents to maintain a clean and safe environment, this issue persists. While some community members have taken the initiative to clean up after these offenders, it is neither fair nor sustainable for the burden to fall on law-abiding citizens.”

She called on authorities to enforce stricter penalties against those who violate waste disposal regulations and take decisive action to prevent further dumping.

In response to a media inquiry submitted to Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) about the issue, media relations acting assistant manager Chuchi Radebe urged members of the community to record evidence and report it to the municipality.

“The ELM will be able to take action against the perpetrators of this action with the help of the community.”
