    Windows 11 on unsupported hardware

Agreed. But I think it's worth trying it out on that machine just see how good/bad the experience would be, as precursor to just get a newer machine. I wouldn't go the Linux route unless the Wife is genuinely ok with it and not just indulging you. Always loathe to recommend the Mac, but again...

Current state of chromium based alternatives to chrome?

I honestly haven't used Firefox on a regular basis in several years. The whole plugin/extension change and shift to dumbing down the interface made it useless for me. I only really use it for compatibility testing now. Tried Vivaldi, but it still has too much redundancy - it's oddly too...

    Windows 11 on unsupported hardware

If you want to test it, you can use Rufus to make a USB installation stick for Win11 that will bypass the requirement check. I recently did this with an inexpensive SSD on my venerable T520 and an T420s It works fine on both of them, but as Entegy mentioned, there's no telling if Microsoft will...

Any difference between C:\Shared\foo.exe and \\localhost\foo.exe?

Is Windows Defender running? Check out the activity on it when you're trying to launch from the network share. If it's your own code, you should be able to add an exclusion for it so Defender will not frisk it every time you launch it.

New Sony Walkman music players feature stunning good looks, Android 12

Definitely filing this under "I don't need this, but want one anyway." That NW-A300 is beautiful. Well placed physical buttons, headphone jack, and full speed USB-C port? And a form factor that actually looks comfortable to hold? Yes, please!

Webcam buying guide: The Ars picks, from affordable to extravagant

Surprised to not see the Logitech Brio here, at least as a baseline for comparison. It has been providing features comparable if not better than most of those in this article for years now. Also, not mentioning Windows Hello support is a big omission; it's a requirement for any Webcam my firm...

E3 confirms 2023 schedule, split between industry, public—but questions remain

Hmm. ReedPop also runs NYCC, so... yeah. Good luck with E3 those that are going.

Winamp, of all things, gets its first update in 4 years

Sweet. Never found a player that worked closer to how i wanted it to than WinAmp. Hopefully it still supports the old visualizations. A new lyrics plugin would be nice too.

    Am I crazy? Self-built passive cooler for R5 5600G

It's gonna throttle. The 5600G needs active cooling unless you're using a large passive cooler. The Noctua NH-L9a will handle it and isn't particularly loud.

    Remembering the BlackBerry Storm

While I didn't buy a Storm or Storm2, part of my job back then was to support and evaluate Blackberries. It wasn't a great device, but was interesting for basically being all screen when most devices still weren't. We had very low adoption of either, as it was not really great for typing. OK it...

Modular Panasonic Toughbook has 8 replaceable parts, 1,200-nit screen

New ToughBook? Nice. Can tell it's way too expensive for what it is. How? Price isn't listed until the end of the article, and it's a Toughbook. Love the modularity, could live with the weight, but it's too thick. I don't want a tablet thin laptop, but it's like ThinkPad G40 thick. They should...

Officials trying to contact all 53K anime convention attendees in omicron probe

I didn't go to DC this year, but a friend who did and saw my pics from Anime NYCC said there was no comparison. Much less dense than DC, except at the entrance, which they tried to improve and was not terrible from midday onward.

Officials trying to contact all 53K anime convention attendees in omicron probe

There were ticket presales, but the organizers did not place a cap on the number sold. There was a limit on how many 3 day passes they sold, but no limit on individual day passes. Had they simply capped ticket sales at 30K or even 40K (just 6K less than 2019) in three times the space, it would...

Officials trying to contact all 53K anime convention attendees in omicron probe

To be clear, the event wasn't crowded per se. The Javits can hold far more people than that. The issue was mainly getting people screened and into the building when it opened. Not enough trained staff at the entrance, combined with a lacking vax requirement led to a lot of people not socially...

LOL Garamond sux, say federal judges

I genuinely doubt it will generate the deep, burning hatred that Comic Sans does. And I think its bigger than Garamond, so the judges might not need their reading glasses.

LOL Garamond sux, say federal judges

Not going to bother looking at my old Word docs to see how many are in Garamond. Most of them probably are. Thing is I just chose it because I like it better than Times New Roman. But the 14 point thing is interesting because it changes the rules we have/had to adhere to in school, which AFAIK...

What to expect from the first-ever virtual CES

Soo... Samsung's CES 2021 presentation video came up as an ad wile I was watching a YouTube video. Figured I'd let it run, see what they were bringing out. Oh. My. <InsertDeity>. I've never seen a video that talks down to its audience like this. The guy is robotic, the way he's spoon feeding...

    Trackball Mouse Recommendations?

I'm a long time M570 user and I've worn though the switches on a couple of them. Issue for me is that typically takes more than 3 years to happen by which time the device is out of Warranty. I've since moved on to the Ergo/Ergo plus, which seems to use different, more durable switches. I've...
